Graded groups

Forty riders. All at your pace.

Pick your group honestly when you book — wristbands and tracking stickers do the rest. Ride quicker than your group and the crew will call you up over the PA. No set speed limits. No one to keep up with.

Slow group

First-time and slow-speed track riders — slow-to-medium road pace.

White band · max 40

Medium group

Ride days done elsewhere, some formal training — medium-fast road riders.

Yellow band · max 40

Medium-fast group

Several SMSP ride days at the faster end of medium — coached and quick.

Green band · max 40

Fast group

Very experienced, very fast track riders — and racers.

Red band · max 40
18:10 · The handover

The sun clocks off. The grid doesn't.

132 towers and 864 LED fittings hold the racing line in daylight until 22:30 — Australia's first permanently floodlit racetrack, and the closest thing to a superpower a Thursday night can buy.

More in the FAQ

Not a race. Not a lesson. Your bike, at full noise.

A ride day is open track time, structured so it stays yours: you ride with people at your pace, course control watches every session, and nobody is chasing a lap time but you.

MEGA has run the two-wheel program here since the nineties — the same crew, the same briefing standards, and a paddock that treats first-timers like future regulars.

  • Tracking stickers monitor pace — regrades happen on the day, both directions
  • Tyre crew, fuel and photographers stay on circuit all day
  • Share a bike with a mate — book two positions, one machine

Paddock debrief

Real riders. Real track experiences.

First-Timers → C group
I nearly didn't come. Then the first-timers briefing walked us through every flag, and the guided lap let me see the circuit before I had to ride it. By session three I stopped shaking — by session six I'd booked the next one.

SMSP Ride Nights
Nights are a different circuit. The air's cooler, the bike's stronger, and the floodlights make the apexes look painted on. Four sessions is exactly enough to empty your head of everything that isn't the next corner.

Full Factory Experience
I arrived with a helmet and nothing else. The M RR was on warmers, a technician tuned the bike to me between sessions, and the coach kept finding time I didn't know I had. For one day I rode like it was my job.

The regrade call
The PA called my number at lunch — new wristband, faster group. That regrade meant more than any lap time. Four seasons from C to A, and the same crew that taped my mirrors on day one is now talking to me about a race licence.

Good to know

Frequently asked.

Ride days and nights are run by MEGA and booked at smsprd.com. Pick a date, choose a package — position only, or with gear or bike hire — create a rider account, then work through rider details, garage and tyres to payment. Your position holds for ten minutes while you check out.

More than seven days out you can refund (less a $25 fee per position) or transfer to another date for $25. Inside seven days there's no refund or reschedule — but you can sell your position to another rider and notify the rider change, right up to the start of the day.

Self-select honestly: C for first-timers and slower road pace, B after ride days elsewhere, B1 once you're quick and coached at SMSP, A for very fast riders and racers. Staff monitor every session and regrade you on the day if you've undersold or oversold yourself — deliberately booking a slower group is treated as a serious breach.

Days: gates 6:30 for registration and scrutineering, safety announcement 8:05, six 20-minute sessions per group from 8:30, track closed 16:30 — no lunch stoppage, so eat between sessions. Nights: arrive 17:00, briefing 18:10, four sessions from 18:30, track closed 22:30.

Rain does not stop an event — the day runs, wet or dry, and lost track time from stoppages or weather isn't reimbursed. If the track is declared wet, slicks are banned; treaded tyres get their grip checked at scrutineering either way.

GP nights run three groups — slow, medium and fast — with four sessions each under the permanent floodlights until 22:30. You'll need a working headlight; tyre warmers earn garage priority and a generator is smart, as pit power is limited. South Circuit nights are the cheaper, tighter option and keep the four-group format.

Almost certainly: any registered road bike is welcome, sports to cruiser. Tape or remove your mirrors (the crew can tape them), have 2 mm+ of tread on the centre and edges, no plug-repaired tyres, bodywork secured without race tape, and racks off. Two riders can share one bike across two positions.

Full leathers — one-piece, or a two-piece that zips together completely. Textile suits and Kevlar jeans can't ride. Add leather boots to mid-calf, gauntlet gloves and an AS1698 full-face helmet; a back protector is strongly recommended.

Yes — a full gear kit is $100, a race-prepped BMW S 1000 RR or Ducati Panigale V4 S is $545 on days ($445 nights), or take both from $595. At the top of the ladder, the $3,990 Full Factory Experience adds your own technician, coach, slicks and tyre warmers on selected dates. Hire bikes carry capped damage liability.

Once every membership year, yes — each bike membership includes a 50%-off SMSP Ride Day voucher. On a $315 weekday that's $157.50 back, which is more than the $105 Bike Enthusiast membership costs. Everything else — free major-event entry, guest passes, discounts — rides on top.

Call or email the ARDC office with your membership number. Once you're validated, a 50% gift voucher is emailed to you — apply it when you book your date at smsprd.com. One voucher per membership year, so save it for the ride you want most.

Bike Enthusiast ($105/yr) covers most ride-day riders — the voucher plus event entry. Enthusiast Plus ($245/yr) adds guest passes for your crew. Bike Competitor ($170/yr, licence required) is for riders heading toward racing: it adds a half-price NIGHTSHIFT voucher and discounted ARDC practice days.
